Marfrig Group receives award for innovating actions for sustainability in the production chain.
Project "Implementing Biodigestors at the Diamantino (MT) Unit" gave Marfrig Group the first place in the Environmental Responsibility category of the Produz Brasil 2010 Award. Marfrig also received an award in the Social Responsibility with project Social Monitoring in the Amazon Biome". The results were announced during an event held yesterday in Goiânia (GO). The Produz Brasil award is an initiative of Magazine Produz in partnership with the São Paulo State Agricultural Federation (FAESP).
Conceive according to the Clean Development Mechanism (MDL) of the Kyoto Protocol (UN), Seara Alimentos' biodigestors in Diamantino, announced in March of this year, is the biggest swine waste treatment in Brazil. The undertaking prevents methane emissions to the atmosphere equivalent to 73 thousand tons of CO2 per year, which represents the planting and preservation of 15 millions of native trees or 6,820 hectares of reforesting. In the total 2 thousand litters of waste, producing approximately 20 thousand cubic meters of biogas/day, which makes the Diamantino Unit self-sufficient and able to generate excess energy to serve a city of 8,5000 inhabitants. With 11 thousand matrixes and 282 finished animals/year, the Diamantino Unit is also the biggest matrix and full and closed-cycle pigs in South America.
On the other hand, project "Social Monitoring in the Amazon Biome". 2nd. Place on the Prêmio Produz 2010 Social Responsibility category, started in October 2009 with the signing of the public commitment "Criteria for Operations of Cattle and Beef Products in Industrial Scale in the Amazon Biome", together with Greenpeace and summarizes Marfrig Group's practical way to buy cattle from farms involved in deforesting and forced labor and located in Indian areas and preservation units. Concomitantly with the embargo, Marfrig started encouraging the best environmental practices through awareness programs and supporting cattle-raisers from the Amazon Bioma to obtain the CAR (Environmental Rural Register) or the LAU (Single Environmental License) in Mato Grosso, and the LAPR (Environmental Licensing in Rural Property) in Rondônia. With five operational units in Legal Amazon (two in Mato Grosso and three in Rondônia), Marfrig buys about 7% of the cattle produced in the region, according to data from Abiec (Brazilian Meet Exporting Companies Association).
